First off, let me start out by saying CONGRATULATIONS! You wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t already making a commitment to better yourself and I applaud you for that. Self-improvement is one of the most difficult challenges we face and the fact that you’re taking the very first step and the initiative to better yourself is AMAZING. Trust me when I say this: it’s all uphill from here! 

But the climb can be treacherous sometimes. Most people when they first start their fitness journey, they don’t see hardly any results and they just quit. You must understand that this is a marathon not a sprint. I’m sure you’ve probably heard that one a few times but it’s the truth my friends. I’ve been working out for ten years now and I’m still not 100% satisfied. But I must go to the gym at least four times a week because it is one of the best habits I’ve ever picked up. It will be yours too if you stay motivated and stick with it. But how in the hell do you stay motivated? 

1.REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED. 

If you remind yourself daily of your “why”, I really feel like you can do the impossible. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the story of Buster Douglas but he’s the guy who knocked out Mike Tyson and became champion. It was one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Leading up to the fight Douglas’s mother passed away, and before she died, she told her son that she wanted him to knock Mike Tyson out. And he did. His “why” was bigger than the fight itself. Now maybe you don’t want to be the next world champion and I get that. Maybe you just want to lose some weight before beach season. That’s a strong “why” as well. I guarantee you if you remind yourself of that while you’re struggling to make it through a workout, you’ll find the energy you need to push through it. FIND YOUR WHY!

2. BE SURE TO TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Make sure you’re always looking at how far you’ve come on your journey instead of how far you must go. Now if you’re just starting out this can be difficult. Trust me, I know. But I’ll give you a tip on how to accomplish this. Take plenty of pictures. That’s right I am strongly encouraging you to take selfies. Take a selfie the first day you start your fitness journey, and then take another one after just one month of really working hard. Put those pictures side by side and you’ll be able to see a difference. Now, for all of you ladies reading this, you’re not going to look like J-Lo. For all the guys reading this, you’re not going to look like Thor. But guess what, YOU’RE MAKING PROGRESS!

3.LISTEN TO MOTIVATIONAL VIDEOS WHILE YOU WORKOUT

I can’t tell you how many times this has helped me push through those tough workouts. The one’s where I didn’t want to go to the gym and just wasn’t feeling any motivation at all. We’re human we all have those days and that’s okay. Some of my personal favorite motivational speakers are David Goggins, Eric Thomas and Les Brown. These guys know what to say to get my blood pumping and spirit to rise. It helps tremendously! There are also a lot of good motivational channels on YouTube you can listen to. A couple of my personal favorites are Mateusz M and MulliganBrothers. Turn these up in your headphones next time you’re feeling unmotivated.

 4.TAKE TIME TO REST

Rest is hands down one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Not only is it good for your body but it’s good for your mind and spirit. This isn’t just pertaining to fitness; this is crucial to anything in life. When you take the time to rest and recharge, your motivation to get back in the gym might just go through the roof. Even back when I first started on my fitness journey I would notice that when I would take a couple of days off I would be itching to get back in the gym again, and my workouts were always great after coming off of a couple of days of resting. Make sure you’re getting at least between 1-3 days of rest. Your body depends on it.

 5.DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS

Not going to lie you guys but I am guilty of this one and still struggle with it today. This is the number one killer to your motivation and it’s a nasty one. In this day and age of social media it is so damn easy to become envious of others. Especially, when you’re just starting out on your fitness journey and you see all these really fit people around you when you’re at the gym. Believe me when I say, that those people have been putting in time and hard work and you’re seeing their results. Don’t compare your “one week” to someone else’s “ten years”. We are all on our own clocks of progression. This can be so discouraging at times but instead of looking at it like this, look at it as motivation. If that person has been working out for ten years and they look amazing, guess what? SO CAN YOU! My acting coach always tells me to not be afraid to clap when someone else’s spaceship takes off. Instead give them a smile and a thumbs up and buckle your seat belt because you want to be ready when your spaceship takes off. Your only competition is the person you face in the mirror.  

 

BONUS

Change up how you work out. Try something different like hiking in the mountains or going for a run on the beach. If you don’t live near the mountains or the beach, set up an obstacle course in your back yard. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your workouts. Go try a kickboxing class or jump into a spin class. Or, dare I say it, try to keep up with the older ladies in a yoga class (let me know how that goes). Changing up your routine can make it a little bit more interesting and fun so don’t ever shy away from that. 

 

AND IN CONCLUSION 

Let’s face it, the first step is always the toughest. Then trying to keep yourself motivated can be even tougher. But if you implement these strategies that I still use till this day, I am confident that you will benefit from them. Transformations aren’t pretty but if you keep a strong mind and a strong will power the results will be more beautiful then you’d ever imagined. KEEP PUSHING YOU GOT THIS!
